Rann of Kutch – Splendid sunset and moon rise at the White Salt Dessert
When we happened to visit the Rann of Kutch during our 5 day trip to the western part of the country, little did we know that we are in for something so magnificent that it will leave us craving for more. Although we may have seen it many a times in movies and pictures, the first hand experience of the White Rann is always better. We guess it’s rightly said, there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path and the same happened with us.
Kala Dungar – The Black Hill!

After our initial formalities for check-in at the tent city, we went straight to Kala Dungar. Kala Dungar is the highest point in the Rann of Kutch and is also known as the Black Hill. The road from Tent City to Kala Dungar was a well maintained, straight road right in the middle of barren land on both sides. Driving on the road from Tent City to Kala Dungar felt awesome as it was coupled with the song Hairat Hai from the movie Anjaana Anjaani playing in the background!

The view of the Rann of Kutch from this place was soothing to the eyes as you can see wide spread water as far as your eyes permit. We also paid a visit to the Dattatreya Temple at the Kala Dungar which is a 400 years old famous temple. After getting some captivating clicks at Kala Dungar, we headed to the Great Rann of Kutch to witness the beautiful sunset.

As it was the time of Rann Utsav, the footfall at the Great Rann of Kutch was more than usual. The first thing that comes to your mind after visiting this place is that it’s HUGE! It appeared that all of a sudden the land had been covered with a white blanket, making it glow. The sun shining on the ground actually made the salt glitter more.

Sunsets are always surreal and when that happens with a huge white foreground in the front, it’s a treat to the eyes. We have witnessed some very beautiful sunrises and sunsets in our journey across the nation and abroad. The magical ones include the sunrise at Tiger Hill, Darjeeling and the mystical sunset at the Dal Lake, Srinagar. However, each of them has something different to offer depending upon the surroundings.

The sunset at the Great Rann of Kutch was mesmerizing beyond words. One can see the transformation of the sun which shines bright and high during the daytime, slowly starts to mellow down and descend at the onset of the evening.
Soon the color of the land started changing from white to orange to dark as the sun settled down. To our surprise, the land started shining slowly even though it was dark, all thanks to the moon which was now shining bright.

For the first time in our lives we witnessed the sun settling down and the rising of the moon simultaneously. We were spectators to the beauty of the nature where we experienced this magic like never before.

As it was a full moon night that day and we knew that the Salt Dessert will be at its prime during midnight we dropped in again after dinner. It was very cold and breezy and we were braving it all with few woolens. The place was much quieter, peaceful and brought a sense of calmness this time. It was so silent that you would just want to be there till the morning.

The land was glowing in the moonlight. We could see a full bright and shining moon up in the sky with loads of stars next to it. Nothing can beat the sight of a full moon night with a clear sky! After putting our camera to work for some time we decided to head back to the tent city and call it a day!

Never heard of Rann of Kutch prior to reading your entry. It’s super gorgeous. I especially love the color of the sunset.
The Rann of Kutch is really magnificent. The sun and the moon acquire a totally different and magical form in this white wonderland. We look forward to get there some day, it has been on our bucket list for some time.

Hello Akshay. Thanks for dropping by. We visited Rann of Kutch in last week of January, on a full moon night. Winters (November to Feb) is the best time to visit Kutch, especially on the full moon nights as the reflection of the moonlight on the white sand looks amazing. Hope this helps. All the best.
