A lot has been written about Bhutan as a country in past few days on our blog. From the itinerary to the things to know before you plan your trip to Bhutan, we tried to share all the relevant information possible. All said and done, we now bring to you the Things to do in Thimphu during your visit to Bhutan. The capital city Thimphu has a lot to offer when it comes to traveling exploring shopping and rejuvenating.

Here are a few loved spots which we could visit during our short yet sweet visit to the city:

1. Clock Tower Square:

The iconic Clock Tower Square

Located right across the main market of Thimphu, this iconic Clock Tower Square draws its name from the 4 clock faces. It is located above the national football stadium and is surrounded by market, cafes and other shops all around. The clock tower square has a large courtyard in the front as is a good place for photography.

2. Changangkha Lhakhang (Thimphu):

This is the most popular temple in Thimphu and resembles a fortress on a ridge above the main Thimphu town. The temple is considered to be very auspicious for the newly born and the infants are brought here soon after they are born.

The view of the Thimphu city is amazing from the temple and the beautiful prayer wheels inside the temple are one amazing sight. The temple also has a courtyard and a mermaid deity for blessing the worshipers.

3. The Folk Heritage Museum:

The museum in Thimphu depicts the lifestyle and culture of Bhutanese people from the ancient times. This museum is built in a 3 story building reflecting the old traditional houses of Bhutan. The ground floor has the barn, the first floor has the storage for household essentials and the third floor has the living and dining area for the family. The third floor also houses the prayer room. This museum also has a restaurant which serves authentic Bhutanese cuisine which should not be missed.

4. Buddha Point or Buddha Dordenma:

The Buddha Point is the first noticeable high point when you reach the Thimphu city. The Buddha Dordenma is one of the worlds largest Buddha statues, standing more than 160ft tall and is made of bronze and covered thinly with gold.

This place also is a home for more than 100 thousand smaller Buddha statues all made with bronze. The bird’s eye view of the Thimphu city from this place is magnificent and breathtaking. The drive to the Buddha point is steep and one needs to be careful especially while going uphill.

5. General Post Office:

What better can it be if you can send a postcard overseas to your home in this age of emails. Well, the wish is fulfilled at the General Post Office in Thimphu. This place has numerous postcards and stamps all promoting the tourist places in Bhutan.

You can also get your personalized stamps printed here by paying extra. The post office also has many other souvenirs to be taken from your trip to Bhutan. The highlight of the place was the Post Box placed right at the entrance taking you back to your childhood days.

Places to Eat:

There are various food joints in Thimphu which serve lip-smacking dishes. The wraps at Foodball in the main market or the buffet breakfast at Ariya Hotels are few such options. Ambient Cafe opposite to the clock tower is a cafe recommended highly for the banana waffle, humongous burgers and coffee. The coffee served at Ambient Cafe was one of the best we had in Bhutan.

There are few other places of interest which we could not cover due to the tight schedule and would love to visit them in our next trip to Bhutan. Other places of interest are:

Tashichho Dzong (Thimpu Dzong)
