Solpon Guest House
When you reach Leh from Srinagar after a long road trip of about 420kms, all you look for is a nice place to retire before you start afresh the next day. While searching for a nice place to stay in Leh, we came across Solpon Guest House which had an excellent rating online due to the amazing hospitality and good food.
Solpon is located in the Upper Changspa region in Leh and is at a perfect location as it is a bit away from the hustle and bustle of the city but has some good cafes and restaurants in the neighbouring areas. The property is run by a Ladakhi lady Dolma along with her always helpful friend Angmo. The guest house has two building blocks, old and new, with different categories of rooms’ right from twin sharing to triple or 4 bedrooms. Since we were staying in the new block, all the rooms were top notch, newly constructed with supremely comfortable beds, very clean washrooms to a nice view of the kitchen garden from the first floor balcony.
Solpon guest house is surrounded by the picturesque mountain ranges of the Himalayas and presents an astonishing view of the sunrise in the morning. The place is really quiet and peaceful and is a perfect place to put up if you are looking for peace away from the corporate world.
Solpon has a kitchen garden used for growing only organic vegetables. The food prepared for the guests consists of these homegrown vegetables and is quite delicious, full of nutrition and cooked with love and care of the hosts. The hosts are very nice people who also offered us to use the kitchen even during the midnight for preparing tea, snacks or anything as per our choice. Definitely feels like a HOME AWAY FROM HOME.
We had initially booked our stay for two nights with plans to move to Nubra and Pangong for two days and come back on the last day before we would start our journey back to Srinagar. However, the love and warmth of the staff pulled us back on both the days when we had plans to stay at Nubra and Pangong. After covering Nubra and Pangong we all decided to head back to Solpon as we knew that we would be able to sleep comfortably after a long day on the road. All thanks to Dolma, the last minute changes in plans were perfectly executed with we getting cozy rooms to stay. This also helped us in covering half the distance as Nubra and Pangong are in opposite directions and we any which ways had to cross Leh in order to reach the destination.
We had usually stayed at hotels in most of our journeys and this was the first time we chose a home stay over a hotel due to the incredible reviews online and Solpon was easily able to live up to our expectations. One of the co-traveller we met in Solpon told us that he has been coming there for the past 8 years and we did not doubt him at all. The staff is really caring and would even help the tourists in case of medical needs like overcoming AMS, etc. I still remember Angmo running with a bowl of hot water as Saumya had some breathing issues due to AMS and Dolma preparing a nice strong ginger tea for her to make her feel better. These things do matter the most when you are so far away from home.
So, if you are looking for an option to stay at Leh and would like to get the best treatment, unlike hotels where things are more professional than personal, Solphon is the place for you. Just remember to carry a torch light with yourself if you want to go out in the night as there were no lights on the road, although it’s very safe as it is Leh.
