Things to do in Mussoorie – A destination guide

The mountains are calling and I must go! This quote seems really apt for us as we can be found planning a trip to the mountains almost every month. The last time when we were in Kanatal, we were discussing our next destination and mountains came as the common choice. We planned a trip to Almora, Binsar, Ranikhet and Munsiyari with family, however, we also had a short trip to Dehradun and Mussoorie before that. The last time we shared a destination guide on Dehradun where we talked about things to do in Dehradun. This time we are sharing the things to do in Mussoorie – A destination guide.

Weekend Getaway from Delhi

Both Dehradun and Mussoorie can be clubbed as a weekend getaway from Delhi. The driving distance from Delhi is around 300kms and takes around 7-8 hours for the drive. The roads are well built and maintained which makes it a comfortable and easy drive even in the hills. We were traveling with few of our blogger friends and that made the journey even more enjoyable.

How to reach Mussoorie

It can be reached easily from all major cities of the country, especially Delhi, via train, bus or flight.

The nearest airport is the Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun which has direct connectivity to Delhi and Mumbai.

Dehradun is also the nearest railway station. While Dehradun has the train connectivity easily via Delhi, there are direct cabs available from Dehradun railway station. You can either look for taxi options online or can directly book a cab from Dehradun. Remember negotiation is the key, however, the fare varies with the type of the cab. They usually charge around 1000INR for a hatchback cab and around 2000INR for a mid-size sedan. SUVs may come somewhere around 2500INR.

There are many Volvos and buses available from Delhi to Mussoorie. Most of them ply during the night from Kashmere Gate ISBT in Delhi and reach Mussoorie the next day in the morning.

Best time to visit Mussoorie:

Mussoorie is one of those popular hill stations in Uttarakhand which can be visited during any time of the year. However, it is recommended to visit it between March to June as the weather is mostly clear during this time. The only con of choosing this time to visit this place is that it is overcrowded and the prices are high for everything during the peak season.

If you are driving from Delhi the two places recommend are Jain Shikanji in Modinagar and Shiva Tourist Dhaba near Muzzafarnagar. While one serves fresh lime soda (shikanji) which should not be missed, the other serves amazingly delicious vegetarian food. Read more about them here.

One more very interesting place where you can stop on the way is the Shiva Temple just 12 km ahead of Dehradun on the highway. The uniqueness of this temple is that it doesn’t accept any offerings in cash or kind. One of the most unique temples in India, they also offer food (langar) to everyone.

Mussoorie is full of stay options. From homestays to luxury resorts and hotels the wide spectrum of places to stay in Mussoorie makes it a very popular hill station in Uttarakhand. The stay options also depend on the budget and definitely has something for everyone. We stayed at the Pacific Hotels, a beautiful 3-star hotel in Mussoorie. The best thing about Pacific Hotels apart from the exceptional service and the extremely courteous staff is its location. Pacific Hotels is located a bit away from the Mall Road which makes it a perfect place to enjoy the serenity and calmness of nature.

Places to visit in Mussoorie

Mussoorie is one of the popular hill stations in India. This makes it a city full of tourist spots in Mussoorie. The places to visit in Mussoorie are both within the city and on the outskirts too. Here is a list of few of those popular tourist destinations in Mussoorie:

1) Sainji- The Corn Village near Mussoorie:

Long Weekend Getaway from Delhi

There are few places from which can be planned as one-day excursions from Mussoorie. These include places like Dehradun, Dhanaulti, Kanatal and Landor. While each of these places is beautiful in its own respect, its close proximity, within 300kms from Delhi, adds to the charm of your trip. These can be clubbed as a long weekend getaway from Delhi.

Places to eat in Mussoorie:

The increase in the number of tourists visiting Mussoorie has boomed the number of eateries in the city. It has a variety of food to offer right from Indian, Continental, Italian, Chinese and desserts too. We went on a food exploration and tried our hands at a few of the specialties.

1) Chick-Chocolate Cafe:
Located on the Mall Road this is a heaven for dessert lovers especially. One of the most happening cafes, the interiors of this place makes you fall for it. The cafe is built with vibrant colors and serves as one of the best hot chocolate fudge in town. Our experience with the Chick-Chocolate Cafe was pleasing as we tried few of their preparations including a cappuccino which was awesome.

Lovely Omelette Center:

Located on the Mall Road, this small egg shop sells one of the best omelets in Mussoorie. We went here on the recommendation from our friends but found it closed as it was a Tuesday.

Kalsang Restaurant:

If you are a Chinese or Tibetan food lover, this is just the place for you. Located on the mall road, the Kalsang Cafe serves authentic Chinese and Tibetan food. We could not eat at the joint as we had our dinner arranged at the Pacific Hotel, where we were staying.

There are many other Maggi and tea/ coffee vendors on the mall road to help you with a quick snack.

Wonderful Guide Visu and Saumya ! It’s wonderful place and during childhood i often seen this place either in Travel Calendar or in some magazine ! I would love to visit this place but only during winter times. Is it good to visit during january ?
